Like all of the Muslim Ummah, we at New Islamic Directions are deeply saddened by the passing of Imam Warith Deen Muhammad. Imam Muhammad was a visionary leader whose influence extended far beyond his immediate community. Imam Muhammad skillfully orchestrated the transition of his father’s community, the Nation of Islam, to Islamic orthodoxy, creating, at that time, the largest distinct group of Sunni Muslims in the United States. Among his many achievements was his ability to conceptualize and then effectively implement a plan that began the conscious indigenization of Islam in America long before others had begun to even discuss such an idea. We extend our deepest condolences to Imam Muhammad’s family and community during this difficult time. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi. Raji’un.
