I have been blessed to know Dr. Nyang for many long decades. He has been a teacher, mentor and an exemplary role model not just for myself but for countless others. He was a true giant who leaves a large pair of shoes that will be difficult to fill.
When I reflect on Dr. Nyang’s scholarship, wisdom, leadership and most of all his commitment to Islam, I am reminded of my own shortcomings in all of these areas. I am, however, inspired to strive to do better, because only by doing better will I be able to make a healthy contribution to the realization of the dream Dr. Nyang had for this American Muslim community.
He envisioned ours as a visionary community capable of making meaningful contributions to our society. Perhaps his greatest aspiration was seeing us realize our potential to become a principled multiracial, multiethnic community and by so being helping this country move beyond the pernicious and nagging effects of racism. Those who knew Dr. Nyang know how deeply and passionately his feeling were in this regard. At this time in our history when racism threatens the very fabric of our republic, may we all redouble our efforts to make Dr. Nyang’s dream a reality.
Our deepest condolences to Dr. Nyang’s family, friends, and multitudes of students, mentees, and admirers.
